Join your child on the ice and get them comfortable in their first skating lesson.  This class is intended to introduce your child to skating in a fun and safe environment.

These lessons will also provide tips and tricks so you can continue to help your child learn during your next ice time together.

During the 30-minute lessons, our trained instructors will take their time to build your child’s confidence on skates and will teach them basic skating skills through games and activities.

Please note, the adult joining the child in this program must be a confident skater who is comfortable skating, stopping, and turning on ice.

Preschool Learn to Skate

Ages 3-5

This tiered (Level 1 – 3) skating program is built for beginners to children already playing Timbits/initiation hockey.

During the 30-minute lesson, our trained instructors will build the confidence of preschoolers and get them moving and improving on their skates through fun games and challenging activities.

Please select the appropriate level based on the abilities of your preschooler.

All participants are required to have skates and a CSA approved helmet. We recommend use of a full facemask. Rental skates and helmets are available to rent.

Preschool Level 1

  • Ages: 3-5
  • Price: $138
  • Program Duration: 6 sessions
  • Session Length: 30 minutes

This level is for beginners who have never been on skates or have a hard time staying up on their own.

The goal of our instructors is to get these young skaters more comfortable on the ice by teaching them skills to improve balance, walking, marching, falling and getting back up.

Key Goals

  • Introduce basic skills
  • Build comfort and confidence on the ice

Prerequisites

  • None

Equipment

  • Skates and a CSA approved helmet.
  • We recommend use of a full facemask.
  • Rental skates and helmets are available to rent.

Preschool Level 2

  • Ages: 3-5
  • Price: $138
  • Program Duration: 6 sessions
  • Session Length: 30 minutes

This level is meant for young skaters that can move around the ice on their own and can perform the skills outlined in level 1.

Our instructors will build on these skills and help skaters learn how to glide on both one and two feet, walking backwards and stopping.

Key Goals

  • Develop forward skating skills such as gliding & turning
  • Introduce backwards skating

Prerequisites

  • •    Successfully completed Parent & Tot or Preschool Level 1.
  • •    Able to walk forwards on the ice and can fall and get up without any assistance.

Equipment

  • •    Skates and a CSA approved helmet. We recommend use of a full facemask.
  • •    Rental skates and helmets are available to rent

Preschool Level 3

This is for the young skater that has accomplished the skills outlined in Levels 1 and 2.

Our instructors will help these gliding skaters improve their forward and backward skating, stopping and turning.

  • •    Improve forwards & backwards skating
  • •    Work on stopping & turning

Prerequisites

  • •    Successfully completed Preschool Level 2
  • •    Able to skate forwards with speed, stop forwards and walk backwards

Equipment

  • •    Skates and a CSA approved helmet. We recommend use of a full facemask.

Learn to Skate Ages 6-12

Youth Learn to Skate

Ages 6-12

Our Youth Learn to Skate program focuses on teaching and developing basic skating fundamentals and can act as a progression into hockey, ringette, figure skating, speed skating or to just feeling confident going skating with friends.

You can register your child into one of six levels that teach skating techniques through circuits, challenging activities, and of course, fun games!

Youth Level 1

  • Ages: 6-12

This program is for those looking to skate for the first time.

Our trained instructors will help skaters get more comfortable on the ice through teaching skills on how to improve balance, walking and marching, falling and getting back up, jumping and turning.

  • Build comfort and confidence on the ice

Youth Level 2

This program is for skaters who can move around the ice on their own and are ready to learn new skills.

Our trained instructors will help develop skating skills such as gliding on one and two feet, forward sculling, walking backwards and stopping. Skaters will start to work on striding and developing their edges.

Key Goals

  • Increase balance and stability
  • Build confidence and control when skating forwards
  • Introduce stopping and turning

Prerequisites

  • Successfully completed Preschool Level 3, or Youth Level 1
  • Beginning to stride forwards and can fall and get up without any assistance

Equipment

  • •    Skates and a CSA approved helmet. We recommend use of a full facemask.
  • •    Rental skates and helmets are available to rent.

Youth Level 3

  • Ages: 6-12

  • Session Length: 1 hour

This program focuses on edge development and stopping. Instructors also introduce backwards skating skills, including gliding, sculling, stopping, and switching between forwards and backwards.  

Key Goals

  •  Increase one-foot balance
  • Build confidence and control when skating backwards
  • Introduce stopping backwards

Prerequisites

  • Successfully completed Youth Level 2
  • Able to skate forwards, stop forwards and walk backwards

Equipment

  • •    Skates and a CSA approved helmet. We recommend use of a full facemask.
  • •    Rental skates and helmets are available to rent.

Youth Level 4

  • Ages: 6-12

This program introduces skaters to walking crosscuts, developing edges on one-foot, and two-foot parallel hockey stops.

Key Goals

  • •    Introduce forwards inside and outside edges
  • •    Introduce crosscuts
  • •    Build confidence stopping and learn to side stop

Prerequisites

  • •    Successfully completed Youth Level 3
  • •    Able to skate and stop both forwards and backwards
  • •    Able to turn from forwards to backwards

Equipment

  • •    Skates and a CSA approved helmet. We recommend use of a full facemask.

This program helps skaters continue to develop forward and backwards crosscuts and pivot turns.

Key Goals

  • Increase speed and power to forwards skating
  • Develop one-foot turns
  • Continued edge and crosscut

Prerequisites

  • Successfully completed Youth Level 4
  • Able to turn from forwards to backwards on one foot

Equipment

Youth Level 6

This level focuses on improving speed and developing forward and backward edges including crosscuts

Key Goals

  • Increase speed and power to both forwards and backwards skating
  • Develop backwards crosscuts
  • Combine turning into a sequence

Prerequisites

  • Successfully completed Youth Level 5
  • Confident when performing edges and forwards crosscuts

Learn to Skate Ages 13-17

Teen Learn to Skate

It’s never too late to learn to skate!  Our teen learn-to skate program welcomes teenagers of all different skill levels to come out for a fun night of learning with their peers.  

Whether they want to learn the basics of skating so that they can lace them up with their friends or they want to progress their skills to join a team, this program will help get them there.  

Participants will be assessed and placed in a group according to skill level on the first day of the program.

    Build comfort and confidence on the ice
  • Continue progression of already acquired skills

Adult Learn to Skate

Are you just learning to skate or are looking to develop your skills? If so, this program is for you! Whether you want to join your kids on the ice for the parent versus kid game at the end of the season, or if you have just always wanted to enjoy our winters by getting on the ice, our trained instructors will help you reach your goals.

Participants will be assessed and placed in a group according to skill level on the first day of the program.

Whether it is learning to skate, power skating, figure skating, hockey skills sessions or ringette skills sessions, you'll be matched with one of our qualified instructors who will teach and challenge you at exactly the right pace for you. Lessons can be booked in either 30 minute or 45 minute sessions.

We can also arrange lessons with a specific instructor of your choice. Please call Guest Services with the instructor's name, and they will be happy to try and match you with your desired instructor.
