Ages 6 - 12 / Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Your child will learn and improve valuable skating skills while having fun in our Youth Learn To Skate program. Beginners will learn the basics such as improving balance and learning to glide, while advanced skaters will refine skills including forward and backward edges and crosscuts. Available from Level 1 (beginner) to Level 6. The ice time for this program is 45 min long.

Important Information

Skate School does not run programming on the following dates:

  • October 10, 11, 12 (Thanksgiving Weekend)
  • February 2 (Daytime programs only. Evening Programs Not Affected)
  • February 13, 14, 15 ( Family Day Weekend)
  • March 27, 28, 29 (Easter Weekend)
  • May 22, 23, 24 ( Victoria Day Weekend)

If your lesson falls on one of these days, your lessons will resume on your selected day the following week.

Learn To Skate - Youth - Level 1

No previous skating experience necessary! This program is for those looking to skate for the first time. Our trained instructors will help skaters get more comfortable on the ice through teaching skills on how to improve balance, walk and march, fall down and get back up, jump and turn.

  • CSA certified hockey helmet (full face mask is highly recommended)
  • Hockey or figure skates
  • Knee and elbow pads (recommended)
  • Warm clothing in layers
  • Snow pants (recommended)
  • Winter gloves or mittens

Skate/Helmet Rental: $5 per lesson. Skates must be returned after each individual lesson and are not permitted to leave the facility.

Learn To Skate - Youth - Level 2

Moving beyond the basics, this program is for skaters who can move around the ice on their own and are ready to learn new skills. Your child will learn to glide on one and two feet, forward sculling, walk backwards and stop. Skaters will start to work on striding and developing their edges.

Pre-requisites

Youth Level 1 or equivalent

Equipment Required

  • CSA certified hockey helmet (full face mask is highly recommended)
  • Hockey or figure skates
  • Knee and elbow pads (recommended)
  • Warm clothing in layers
  • Snow pants (recommended)
  • Winter gloves or mittens

Key Goals

Learn gliding on one and two feet, forward sculling, walking backwards and stopping.

Add-ons

Skate/Helmet Rental: $5 per lesson. Skates must be returned after each individual lesson and are not permitted to leave the facility.

Learn To Skate - Youth - Level 3

Your child will enhance their skating skills in this program with a focus on edge development and stopping. Instructors also introduce them to backwards skating skills, including gliding, sculling, stopping, and switching between forwards and backwards.

Pre-requisites

Youth Level 2 or equivalent.

  • CSA certified hockey helmet (full face mask is highly recommended)
  • Hockey or figure skates
  • Knee and elbow pads (recommended)
  • Warm clothing in layers
  • Snow pants (recommended)
  • Winter gloves or mittens

Key Goals

Introduce backwards skating skills, including gliding, sculling, stopping, and switching between forwards and backwards

Build those on-ice skills! In this intermediate program your child will be introduced to walking crosscuts, developing edges on one-foot, and two-foot parallel hockey stops.

Pre-requisites

Youth Level 3 or equivalent.

  • CSA certified hockey helmet (full face mask is highly recommended)
  • Hockey or figure skates
  • Knee and elbow pads (recommended)
  • Warm clothing in layers
  • Snow pants (recommended)
  • Winter gloves or mittens

Key Goals

Introduces skaters to walking crosscuts, developing edges on one-foot, and two-foot parallel hockey stops.
