2020/21 Frequently Asked Questions - Snow School

COVID INFORMATION

How are you ensuring participant safety?
  • We are following guidelines set by the Government of Alberta and Alberta Health Services.
How is WinSport screening participants? What are the safety guidelines?
  • All lesson participants (or parent/guardian) will be required to complete a daily health screening assessment before attending a WinSport Snow School Program.
  • Participants will not be permitted to attend if they are ill or answer “yes” to any screening question.
  • As part of our rapid response plan, if the participant develops symptoms while in lessons, they will be isolated from other participants. If need be, a parent or guardian must be available to pick them up immediately. WinSport will send a follow-up email outlining a possible return to lesson scenario. If you would like more information on our detailed rapid response plan email snowschool@winsport.ca
  • WinSport cannot guarantee that any individual attending  lessons, using WinSport's facilities, or participating in activities organized by WinSport will not become infected with COVID-19.
  • If the lesson participant cannot attend their lessons due to the results of the health screening questionnaire, the timing of when they can return will be determined by WinSport’s Return to Sport Policy.
What if the lesson participant or a member of their household has symptoms of illness?
  • We encourage them to complete the Alberta Health Services (AHS) self-assessment if the participant or a member of their household has any symptoms or feel unwell and follow guidelines provided for self-isolation and testing. See AHS self-assessment tool.
  • A participant cannot attend if they are ill.
  • If the lesson participant is required to miss a lesson, please see our cancellation policy for further details.
What if the lesson participant or household member has an underlying health condition, compromised immune system or lives with an older household member?
  • The Government of Alberta has reported that serious illness, including death, appears to develop more often in people who are older or have pre-existing conditions or are immune-compromised. You should consult your family physician before the lesson participant attending a WinSport Snow School Program to determine whether it is appropriate for them to attend.
  • What if the lesson participant recently travelled outside of Canada, can they still attend the lesson?
  • If the Snow School Program you are planning to attend falls within 14 days of you  arriving back in Canada then no, you cannot attend the lesson. Anyone who has returned from outside of Canada is legally required to quarantine for 14 days and monitor for symptoms, per the Government of Alberta.
What happens if the lesson participant misses a lesson due to symptoms or illness or other screening questions?
  • Please see the Snow School Refund/Cancellation policy below.
Will face coverings be required by staff or participants?
  • Yes, while onsite all individuals will be required to wear a face covering.  This includes in the parking lot, during check-in and check-out process, during your lesson and while inside any building. A face covering means a mask or other face covering that fully covers the nose, mouth and chin.
  • All face coverings must be at least 2 layers of fabric. A face covering may include a winter face/neck covering (such as a Buff) as long as it is has two layers of fabric covering your nose and mouth.
  • It is important that all masks fit well and do not require constant adjustment throughout the lesson or during your time at WinSport. The participant’s nose must be covered by the face covering at all times.
  • Please test your face covering prior to attending your lesson to ensure it will remain in place.
Will you share my personal information with AHS?
  • You will be required to complete a consent form allowing WinSport to disclose to AHS your personal information to assist with contact tracing if a potential COVID-19 exposure occurs onsite and if requested by AHS.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

What are the group sizes for lessons?

  • Youth – 1:6 ratio
  • Adult – 1:8 ratio
  • Academy 6-12 – 1:6 ratio
  • Private – 1:1 ratio up to a maximum of 6
  • Discover – 1:8 ratio

What programs are running this winter?

  • Due to capacity constraints on the hill and changes in operations due to COVID-19, we are focussing on key programsand limited our numbers. For this reason you may notice some age ranges in programs have been eliminated, there are no PD Day or full-day group lessons and options for teens and adults have been reduced.
  • This winter, our customized private lessons will take the place of many previous lesson offerings. These custom lessons can be built for either one-on-one instruction and/or to build out cohort style semi-private lessons for a group at a similar level of skiing or snowboarding.

Why do I have to be on snow with my preschooler?

  • Our 1-hour private lessons are the perfect way to get your preschooler on snow. This year we require a parent to be present in lessons for any child ages 3-5 (snow) and 4-6 (snowboard). This is for the safety of our guests and Team Members and allows the parent to safely support all of the hands on needs for the child while receiving high quality instruction.
  • As the parent, you will not be charged to attend the lesson, however you must arrive with the appropriate ski or snowboard equipment and must have at least an intermediate level of proficiency in the sport. Parents will not be allowed to attend lessons on foot. We will require a 1 parent to 2 children ratio for these lessons to operate with a maximum of 4 children in the group.
  • We ask that parents are equipped with the same equipment as the lesson their child is taking (i.e. skis for a ski lesson and snowboard for a snowboard lesson). Rental equipment is available at an extra cost if needed.

What waivers am I required to sign?

  • Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreements. You will be required to complete and sign at least two of WinSport’s Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreements (“Waivers”) before the first day of lessons. These will include a Ski & Snowboard Waiver and COVID-19 Waiver.

How will I complete these waivers?

  • All Waivers and related documents must be completed electronically through our online waiver submission application prior to arrival. You will receive an email link to complete the waivers prior to the lesson start date. In the event such Waivers are not completed in WinSport’s standard form, your child will not be permitted to participate in lessons. The Waivers can be viewed here: Ski & Snowboard Waiver and COVID-19 Waiver.

What is the refund/cancellation policy?

  • Cancellations made more than 7 days before the new lesson start date will be refunded less a $20 processing fee. Cancellations made between 7 days and 72 hours before the lesson start date will be credited to the purchaser’s WinSport account.
  • Cancellations made with less than 72 hours prior to lesson start date will receive no credit or refund.
  • If WinSport is required to cancel lessons due to any Covid-19 related instances you will receive a pro-rated credit.
  • There are no refunds for missed classes during a program.
  • Credits issued to the purchaser’s WinSport account are valid for one calendar year from the date of issue. If you have any additional questions, please email our Guest Services team at info@winsport.ca

Will lessons be cancelled if it is too cold?

  • Lessons may be cancelled in cases of extreme cold. Decisions on cancelling programs, closing the hill, or altering operating hours due to cold weather will be made by noon the previous day, and may be based upon, but not limited to, forecasted temperature, windchills and forecasted weather trends. All participants are encouraged to check the hill report  for lesson updates and operating hours.
  • In the event WinSport cancels lessons due to weather, we will reach out to you via email as soon as we know. We will place a credit on your WinSport account which can be used towards programming within one year.

Are there going to be wait lists for Snow School Programs?

  • There will be a wait list option, however with limited capacity in our lessons we cannot guarantee a space will become available and may suggest another lesson.

Who is allowed on snow this year?

  • To manage hill capacity for the safety of our staff and all participants, access to snow will be restricted this season. Only those with a valid ticket/pass and actively engaged in an activity with appropriate equipment will be permitted on snow.
  • Foot passes will not be available, and spectators (including those wishing to view lessons and/or walk alongside others on the hill) will not be permitted.
How will check-in or check-out occur this year?
  • We recommend having only one family member drop-off and pick up participants to limit exposure and have the same family member do this every day of the program if possible. We understand if an additional sibling needs to come with you during the check-in and check-out process.
  • A face covering and social distancing will be required during check-in and check-out.

Why are lessons more expensive this year?

  • Our lessons are running at a slightly increased cost due to our lower capacities on the hill and in programs. There has also been an increase in resources being put towards implementing and upholding rigorous safety and cleaning measures during the current situation.
  • Decreased program capacities add value to lessons as the participants will get more personalized feedback about ability and progression.

How do I know what level to register for?

  • We always recommend starting the lesson participant in a lower level to ensure that they can get the most out of their progression by working in a safe and inspiring environment. Skill assessments will take place to ensure lesson participants are placed in the appropriate group, resulting in the right level of challenge and support. To find the right level, try our Levels Guide here.

Will rentals be available?

  • Yes, rentals will be available for lesson participants. All rentals will be required to be booked in advance at the time of lesson registration. Rentals available this season: skis, boots, poles, helmet OR snowboard, boots, helmet. We do not rent clothing or goggles.
  • Please arrive within the allotted timeof the booked rentals. I.e. If your lesson is at 11:00 a.m., the rental booking will be made for 10:00 a.m. as an add-on within your online order. Please arrive as close to 10:00 a.m. as possible as we are managing capacities within our rental shop to provide safe distancing.
  • We ask that only the participant (if over the age of 18) or the participant plus one parent/guardian (over the age of 18) pick up and drop off rentals. To limit exposure, please ensure this is the same person each time (if required).
  • Waivers will be required for all rental bookings.
  • Parent who are attending a lesson with their preschooler and need equipment will need to purchase rentals. Rental add-on prices are: $14 for preschool, $24 for adults.

Why can't I use my credit online?

  • Unfortunately account credits cannot be redeemed during online purchases. Please call Guest Services if you would like to apply your credit towards lesson/pass purchases at 403-247-5452 ext. 4.

Do we receive a lift ticket with the program?

  •  All Snow School participants will receive a 4-hour lift ticket with the program. Lift ticket and applicable rentals booked for the lesson will be valid to a maximum time of 4 hours. Any Academy club participants will be required to purchase a season pass.

Do we receive a free hill road pass with the program?

  • All participants that require a pass for access to the road gate will receive their pass on their first day of lessons. This will be valid for the duration of their program.
