Ages 9 - 11 / Levels 1, 2

Campers, are you ready to take summer camp to the next level? Get ready for a week of survival challenges, adventures, and missions. You will learn wilderness skills including knife whittling, knot tying, and fire building all designed to help you reach your survival objectives. By the end of the week, you will take these skills with you to explore Kananaskis and/or the Bow Valley in partnership with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS).

Parents, from safe knife handling to calculated trip planning your kids will leave our camp with big smiles and you will leave feeling secure knowing you child has the foundations for safe and responsible exploration.

Camp schedule: This camp runs from 9am to 4pm. Complimentary before-and-after care is available from 8am to 9am, and 4pm to 5pm. If you require before and/or after care, please let your instructor know on the first day of camp.

Wilderness Survival Skills - Level 1

In this Level 1 camp, participants will be introduced to the skills needed for outdoor survival. They will practice shelter building using man-made and natural materials, learn to build and maintain a fire safely, learn to use a packable camping stove, and enjoy games outdoors and in nature.

Pre-requisites

  • New to wilderness skills such as fire building, knife carving, shelter building and knot-tying
  • Interested in the outdoor and want to explore more!
  • Able to hike 3-5 km daily

Equipment Required

  • Outdoor athletic footwear; hiking boots preferred
  • Backpack with waist straps
  • Two 2L water bottles

IMPORTANT – WAIVER(S) REQUIRED

A Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreement ("Waiver") must be completed prior to participation in any WinSport Programs, Lessons, and Camps. If the applicable Waiver(s) is/are not completed, participation in the WinSport Program and access to WinSport's facilities will not be permitted, and a refund will be provided.

  • A Parent/guardian must complete the applicable Waiver(s) for their minor/child participants

  • Any issued passes are non-transferable and can only be used by the participant

Wilderness Survival Skills - Level 2

This Level 2 camp takes outdoor skills to the next level. Participants will hone tool usage skills including knife whittling, batoning, and using a survival saw. They'll learn more about shelter building, enjoy extensive training in plant foraging, navigation, and outdoor leadership. Campers will also learn primitive friction-based fire-making methods, will craft and use their own bow drill, and will cook a meal using a camp stove.

Pre-requisites

  • Experience with wilderness skills such as fire building, knife carving, shelter building and knot-tying including attending a former WinSport Wilderness camp or equivalent
  • Have previously started and tended to a fire independently and extinguished that fire
  • Have previous experience safely using a survival knife; including carving, sheathing and storing
  • Interested in practicing these skills and taking them into the mountains
  • Able to hike 5-8 km daily
