WinSport Hill Update
Due to the City of Calgary’s upcoming water restrictions, the opening date for our ski and snowboard hill is currently uncertain. Learn more about the impact of these restrictions, and find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions, below:
Why are these water restrictions necessary?
The City of Calgary is implementing water restrictions for approximately four weeks to support the connection of the new Bearspaw South Feeder Main to the existing water system. During this work, which is scheduled to start on Nov. 4, the existing Bearspaw South Feeder Main will be temporarily shut down, significantly reducing how much water can be distributed across the city.
While the restrictions are in effect, WinSport cannot plan on accessing the significant amount of water required for normal snowmaking operations, which is why our opening date is now uncertain.
Why is snowmaking so important?
While we always appreciate a good dump of natural snow, we rely heavily on snowmaking to provide the necessary cover for your favourite winter sports. During the season, approximately 97% of the snow on our ski and snowboard hill is artificial.
Of course, we also need the weather to cooperate. Last season, our opening date was Dec. 5.
What is required for snowmaking?
There are three key ingredients for snowmaking — water, high-pressure air and cold temperatures. The temperature must be -3 C or lower, which is why snowmaking operations often run at night.
Is there any possibility of an exemption?
WinSport supports the need to protect Calgary’s water supply. We are continuing to have conversations with the City regarding possible snowmaking opportunities, and we know that they value our role as a community recreation hub and understand our concerns about staffing impacts and lost revenue, especially as a not-for-profit organization.
What happens to my season pass?
Your season pass remains valid — and we appreciate your continued support of WinSport. We know our pass holders are excited about the upcoming season, and we understand that many of you are frustrated by the uncertainty over our opening date. While there are some factors that are outside of our control, we can assure you that we will do everything we can to open at the earliest possible date. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact info@winsport.ca.
What happens to my Snow School lesson/program?
We are reviewing affected programs and will communicate directly with registered participants if changes are necessary. No action is required from participants at this time.
Do these restrictions affect the Servus Tube Park?
Unfortunately, these restrictions will also limit WinSport's ability to make snow for the Servus Tube Park. As a result, its opening date is also uncertain.
What can I expect from WinSport between now and opening date?
You can count on us to capitalize on any opportunities for snowmaking, and to provide updates whenever we have new information to share. We sincerely appreciate your support and understanding.
