September 1-2 - Tour of Alberta
Top
September 1-2 - Tour of Alberta This short 4 kilometre course routes exclusively within Canada Olympic Park in Calgary and starts flat with the final 1.3 kilometres climbing more than 100 metres elevation with six switchbacks to the finish. Riders will start in one-minute intervals and race against the clock. The cyclist with the fastest time will garner the Leader’s jersey and first place. The Subway® Prologue will play a significant role in determining the overall winner of the race because of both the nature of a time trial and the severity of the climb within such a short course.

Please Note: Due to the Tour of Alberta cycling race, there will be significant restrictions on parking and access to WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park on Sept. 1-2.

  • The West Track Access Road (from the top of the bobsleigh track to the bottom of the hill) will be closed as of 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31st, and will re-open on Wednesday, Sept. 3rd at 7 a.m.

  • In addition, the main road to the Park will be closed to vehicles beginning at midnight on Monday, Sept. 1st and will re-open on Wednesday, Sept. 3rd at 5 a.m. Please note that any vehicles left in the park after midnight on Sept. 1 cannot be accessed until Sept. 3rd.

  • On Tuesday, Sept. 2nd, WinSport staff, tenants, arena users and other visitors will be required to access the Park via 1st Avenue, SW (see map below) and park in the West Overflow lot. No other vehicle traffic will be allowed within the park.

  • Transit users: Organizers of the Tour of Alberta have made arrangements with Calgary Transit to have the 305 and 408 routes skip the COP stop on Sept 2nd, requiring users to board and disembark at the stops near the Shell station/McDonald’s north of 16th Avenue.

  • Spectators who are coming to watch the race are encouraged to car pool, with public parking to take place at Sunnyside Home and Garden Centre (3439 69 Street N.W.) where shuttles will be provided to WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Catharsis Catapult Competition
  • 2:00pm - 5:00pm
  • Free for All Ages

Beakerhead winds down by winding up the most massive and delightful catapults built! Local teams (within driving distance) will design and build catapults with the intention of tossing love-to-hate items, whether a gang of Barbie dolls or a box of an ex’s stuff. As far as design goes, the quirkier, the better! These teams will bring throwing contraptions ready to square off with other teams for the final event of Beakerhead! The competition is open to the public and promises to be both a great tension release for competitors and the audience.

November 1 - Fast and Female Veteran Canadian national team cross-country skier, Chandra Crawford wanted to help keep youth active and girls involved in sport. In 2005, that led her to create Fast and Female, a not-for-profit society aimed at empowering young women in sport. Fast and Female’s goal is simple: To support, motivate, inspire and empower girls ages nine to 19 to stick to sports and the healthy lifestyle.  It’s all about empowerment through sport, with the organization hosting fun-filled, non-competitive programming for girls, led by female Olympians and elite athletes. Fast and Female also delivers educational content to parents and coaches.

On Nov. 1, WinSport will be the host venue for the Fast and Female Girls in Sport summit. The event has spots for up to 150 girls aged nine to 19 and 50 spots for parents and coaches, and features a full day of programming, including sessions with nutritionists, sports psychologists and Olympians.
