Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are valued members of the WinSport team, providing essential support to various departments and activities. There are currently more than 580 volunteers at WinSport helping to promote sport, to develop Canadian athletes and to introduce children to active living. If you have a passion for sport, leadership or community, we are looking for you! Volunteers are recruited on an ongoing basis for a wide variety of programs – both seasonal and year-round. Winter season positions are posted by September. Summer volunteer positions are posted by March. Opportunities are available to volunteer as an individual, family or with friends. Some opportunities may have limited availability, dependant on program needs.

Hockey Program Assistant (Age 13+)



Got Game? Love to be on the ice? If you have a passion for hockey and would like to share that with others, then we want you on our goal medal team! This volunteer performs a critical role in the delivery of our Discover Hockey programs by assisting the instructor with the demonstration of skills and overall delivery of the program.

Arena Attendant Assistant (Age 13+)



Do you love hockey? Would you like to volunteer behind the scenes of our on-ice events and help out on the ice level? If you have a passion for hockey and would like to assist with large scale public events and hockey tournaments then we want you on our goal medal team. The Arena Assistant performs a critical role by assisting our Arena team with all ice related tasks before during and after an event. Events include: Hockey Canada camps and games, elite hockey tournaments, Inferno games and ice shows.
Your role
Arena Attendant Assistants are members of the Arenas team and provide assistance to the Ice Technicians during setup/clean-up for events and during intermissions, on and off the ice. Shifts will vary and are dependent on event times.


Responsibilities
  • Assist the ice technicians by placing and moving hockey nets (on and off the ice)
  • Placing hockey nets after the completion of the flood
  • Setup and roll out red carpet for national anthems, presentations, etc.
  • Ensure all access gates are closed and secured so the resurfacers can enter the ice surface
  • Patch any divots in the ice surface prior to the resurfacing
  • Remove standing water at the ice resurfacer gate at the completion of the flood
  • Set up equipment for on-ice activities and games
  • Follow the senior ice technician’s direction and leadership
  • Test the rinks sound system to ensure proper operation prior to game time
  • Assist ice technicians in the event of any broken glass and replacement
  • Provide friendly customer service for our guests
  • Provide additional assistance as required

Skate Program Assistant (13+)

Welcome Host (Age 18+)



The Welcome Host volunteer is a member of the Guest Experience team. Welcome Hosts are the first point of contact for our guests and therefore are responsible for greeting guests and providing direction, information and assistance at a variety of locations at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park. The position is broken down into three assignments: Daylodge, Mini Golf, Bobsleigh. Once trained, volunteer are able to sign up for any of the assignments listed below.

Daylodge Welcome Host
  • Mobile position floating between the day lodge entrance, ticket kiosks and RFID line up
  • Must be comfortable approaching guests and offering assistance or a friendly hello
  • Monitor line ups and redirect guests as needed
  • Answer any questions guests may have about events, programs and the facilities
  • Approach guests who appear to be lost and ask if they require assistance
  • Provide guests with up to date information about WinSport and available services
  • Assist guests while using the new RFID system.
  • Monitor line ups and engage with guests in line ups (indoors and outdoors)
  • Direct guests to use self-service ticket options rather than waiting in line

Mini Golf Host
  • Welcome guests to the mini golf
  • Assist Guest Services staff by handing out golf putters and golf balls
  • Check through the course to ensure it is clean and presentable
  • This volunteer position will not handle cash or payments/transactions
  Bobsleigh Host
  • Direct guests at the end of their ride back to the Daylodge/future activities
  • Offer to take pictures of the guests with the bobsleigh
All Welcome Hosts volunteers regardless of assignment are required to:
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required

Skate Marshal (18+)



Do you love people and have a passion for skating? If you would like to share your passion with our guests then we have a great opportunity for you!

Skate Marshalls are members of the Arenas team and are responsible for providing direction and information to guests visiting the arenas at the Markin MacPhail Centre during public skating and shinny hockey.
Responsibilities
  • Provide friendly customer service for our guests
  • Greet and chat with guests as they enter the building
  • Collect public skate and public shinny tickets when Welcome Hosts are not present and provide information on where to purchase tickets
  • Skate during public skating times and interact with guests
  • Ensure guests are wearing proper equipment and abiding by rink etiquette
  • Manage music during skate times
  • Answer any questions guests have about the facility, tournament events occurring that day, lessons and the park in general
  • Approach guests who appear to be lost and ask if they require assistance
  • Take responsibility for the dressing room key and locking the room during shinny games
  • Provide additional assistance as required
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
  • Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to all WinSport safety policy and procedures and ensuring one’s own  safety is  preserved along with the safety of co-workers and WinSport guests

Facilitator



WinSport provides additional training to volunteers ages 14-17 through the WinSport Youth Leadership Program. There are 9 modules including: Leadership, Communication, Personal Wellness, Teamwork, Diversity, Conflict Management, Problem Solving, Planning and Organization and Leisure Education. Facilitators work as a team to deliver the program to small learning groups of 15 youth volunteers. The program takes place over the course of four week day evenings. If you have a passion for leadership and inspiring youth then we'd love to talk to you!
Responsibilities
  • Plan and facilitate the training sessions based on the guidelines of WinSport and the LEAD program
  • Utilize the available space effectively during training
  • Establish positive relationships with the participants and act as a role model, demonstrating maturity and compassion at all times
  • Coordinate with the Human Resources Advisor, Volunteers to ensure supplies needed are available
  • Ensure a strong understanding of the LEAD program’s nine modules and how they relate to WinSport
  • Work with co-facilitators to ensure a positive delivery of the content
  • Redirect activities as needed, based on the needs of the group
  • Debrief with the Human Resources Advisor, Volunteers and facilitators, providing feedback and ideas to strengthening the program
  • Interact with guests, staff and fellow volunteers in a respectful and supportive manner
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
  • Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to  all  WinSport safety policy and procedures and ensuring one’s own  safety is  preserved along with the safety of co-workers and WinSport guests

Rental Shop Assistant (13+)



What do you get when you have thousands of skiiers and snowboarders and a ton of boots, skis, poles and boards coupled with a big dump of snow? A VERY busy Rental Shop at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park!

We are looking for volunteers who are quick on their feet to help our rental shop team fit hundreds of winter sport enthusiasts with the proper gear and get them out on the hill as quickly as possible.
Your Role
  • Assist with traffic flow at the entrance and exit of the rental shop
  • Talk to guests in line and ensure they have paid for rentals
  • Escort unpaid guests back to guest services, give them priority service and help them back to the rental shop to get to their lesson on time.
  • Help the rental team clean equipment and put it back in place
  • Assisting guests to find the proper boot size

  You Are

Discover Park Host (13+)



The Discover Park Host is a member of the Guest Services and Snow School Team.  They are responsible for supporting Guest Experience on the conveyor carpets located in the Discover Park area of the hill. This position is outdoors and is performed on foot (skis or snowboard not required)
Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to skiers and snowboarders on the conveyor carpets
  • Assume the lead in providing crowd control at the conveyor lift lines (Gold, silver and progression carpets)
  • Ensure guests are following the spacing protocol of the conveyor lifts by providing direction on when to load.
  • Greet and chat with guests while they are waiting to use the conveyor lifts
  • Answer any questions guests may have about the lifts, the park and the sport
  • Check to ensure guests have hill tickets
  • Provide direction to guests looking for lessons area other facilities onsite
  • Report safety concerns and accidents to dispatch
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
  • Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to  all  WinSport safety policy and procedures and ensuring one’s own  safety is  preserved along with the safety of co-workers and WinSport guests

Volunteer Resources Support



The Volunteer Resources Support volunteer provides administrative support to Volunteer Resources and the Human Resources Advisor, Volunteers through managing day to day tasks and special projects.
Your Role
  • Support various Volunteer Resources initiatives including recruitment, scheduling,  recruitment initiatives: attend volunteer fairs, process mail outs and engage with community partners
  • Support the on boarding process for volunteers: participate in interviews and collecting paperwork
  • Support the Volunteer Resources department with various administrative tasks as assigned
  • Provide backup coverage for the Front Reception desk, as needed
  • Maintain up-to-date information regarding WinSport
  • Opportunities to engage in various Volunteer Resources projects and initiatives, including the Youth Leadership Program, Performance Management, Risk Management and Recognition

Event Team



Event Team volunteers provides event day support to Catering, Sales and Events. Events vary in sizes and can include holiday parties, concerts, sporting events and corporate picnics.
Your Role
  • Direct guests to activities and seating
  • Host activities including bocce ball, bouncy house, arts and crafts, dunk tank, ball pit, sumo wrestling, horseshoes, video games, face painting
  • Assist with clearing tables,

PTC Attendant (18+)



The PTC Attendant plays an active role in the back ground of the customer service experience of the Performance Training Centre at WinSport.
Your Role
  • Support the ongoing clean up of the weight room
  • Provide attendant support to the change rooms, ensuring they are tidy and shampoo and conditioner containers are full
  • Ensure towels are stocked, washing and folding as needed
  • Opportunity to learn the inner workings of behind the scenes at a Performance Training Centre
  • Interact with guests, staff, and fellow volunteers in a respectful and supportive manner
  • Maintain a safe environment for all participants by modeling safe behavior
  • Provide additional assistance as required
  • Read and abide by all information provided at orientations and trainings

Table Clearer



The Table Clearer volunteer supports the Food and Beverage Team at the Day Lodge Cafeteria and the Garden Café. The volunteer will help maintain a clean and safe environment for customers and be a key member of a team that strives for high customer satisfaction.
Your Role
  • Pick up trash on tables, benches and chairs
  • Use cleaning products to wipe down tables, benches and chairs
  • Interact with guests, staff, and fellow volunteers in a respectful and supportive manner
  • Maintain a safe environment for all customers, staff and volunteers by modeling safe behavior
  • Provide additional assistance as required
  • Read and abide by all information provided at orientations and trainings
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required

Leadership Program

WinSport recognizes leadership as a valuable component of the youth volunteer experience. Volunteers between the ages of 14 -17 years of volunteering as Assistant Pro (AP & Mountain Bike), Counselor in Training, Ringette CIT and Hockey CIT are required to complete the Winsport Leadership Program. The Youth Leadership Program promotes growth and skill development necessary for successful youth leaders and ensures they are given the tools to succeed as volunteers at WinSport. Upon completion of this program, youth are able to recognize the impact they can make as leaders and the difference they can make in their community.

The Leadership Program is based on the City of Calgary’s LEAD program and has been adapted for the Winsport volunteer program. The program is held on site prior to the start of the winter and summer seasons and is offered free of charge. Upon completion of the training component and 20 volunteer hours with a satisfactory evaluation participants receive a leadership certificate.
