Power Skating - Know Before You Go

Before you arrive

There’s nothing worse than having to rush to a lesson and then not know where to park, how or where to register, get rentals if you need them and search for your dressing room. We’ve created some tips below to get you to the right place at the right time, stress-free.

Remember to bring a few important items you’ll need to show our team members before you start your lesson.

  • Completed online forms
  • Your Progress Card from your previous lesson, if applicable

Checking into your First Skate Lesson at WinSport

Note: If you have your own equipment and need your skates sharpened or equipment repaired, Breakaway Sports Repair is located at WinSport in the lobby of Markin & MacPhail Centre’s Player’s Entrance.

West Track Service Road / Hill Gate Pass

If you are signed up for a lesson, there is a West Track Service Road / Hill Gate pass available for the duration of your lesson. This must be picked up from the Guest Services desk in the Frank King Day Lodge and activated prior to the first lesson.

Parents

All parents participating in the lesson with their child must be confident skaters.

Parents are not permitted to watch from the player’s benches but, are welcome to watch from the stands. To get to the stands you need to go up one floor, this is accessible by elevator or stairs.

Parking at WinSport

Parking is free at WinSport. However, on weekends and holidays we suggest allowing for extra time since you may need to park at another lot further away. For your lessons, park in the Player’s Lot. If there is no parking available there, use the lot on the south side of the Markin McPhail Centre (MMC) beside the Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

If you park in the lot beside Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, you will enter through the main doors of the MMC and turn right. Proceed until you reach the elevators, take the elevator down to the arenas.

Skate and Helmet Rentals

WinSport rents helmets and skates to program participants.

We recommend booking these rentals when you book your lessons

Rentals can also be booked prior to your lesson by calling 403.247.5452 ext. 4. Please have your program confirmation available to speed up the process

Rental packages can be picked up prior to your lesson and dropped off after leach lesson at our Rental Kiosk located in Arena C at the arena floor level.

Lesson and Dressing Room Locations

  • Cancellations made more than 7 days prior to the program start date will be refunded less a $20.00 processing fee.
  • Cancellations made between 7 days and 24 hours prior to the program start date will be credited to the purchaser's WinSport account.
  • No Cancellations can be made within 24 hours of the program start date.
  • There are no refunds for missed classes during a program.
  • Credits will be kept on the purchaser's WinSport account for one calendar year.

Ski/Snowboard Lessons - Know Before You Go

Before you arrive

There’s nothing worse than having to rush to a lesson and then not know where to park, register and get pick up your rental equipment. We’ve created some tips below to get you to the right place at the right time, stress-free.

Before you leave for your lesson make sure that you have the important items you will need to show our team members before you can start your lesson:

  • Program confirmation email
  • Completed online forms
  • Rental waiver (can be picked up outside the rental shop, but must be completed before you enter the rental shop)

We recommend that participants use the washroom prior to the start of your lesson to maximize your time on snow.

Helmets specifically designed for alpine sports are mandatory for all lesson and program participants.  All terrain park users including adults must also be wearing Alpine Sport helmets. Helmets are available to rent or purchase on site, just ask our Guest Services team if you aren’t sure.  

To ensure everybody on the hill can ski and snowboard in a fun and safe manner, there are some guidelines we ask all our visitors to follow.

  • Due to limited space and for the safety of your child, we ask that parents please respect the parent-free zones. The designated areas for parents to safely watch their child from are located at the Beginner Area, Red School House and the back deck of the Frank King Day Lodge.   • There are designated foot traffic areas, but a valid ticket is required. Ask a Guest Service’s team member
  • Keep your dog safe. There are no pets allowed on the ski /snowboard hill, except service animals.

Clothing - What should I wear for my lesson?

The weather in Calgary can change hourly, so we want to make sure you stay comfortable for your entire lesson. Check WinSport’s Trail Conditions page for the weather conditions and dress appropriately.

Dress for comfort in layers so you can adjust your temperature as the conditions on the hill change. There are several pieces of clothing and equipment we’ve listed below that should keep you as warm and dry as possible all day long

When should I be there for my lesson?

If you are renting Equipment - PLEASE ARRIVE AT LEAST 1-HOUR PRIOR TO YOUR LESSON TIME.

Bring your completed rental waiver. You will need to indicate your weight, height and shoe size. There are sizing charts, scales and height charts located in the rental shop. This information is required so they can fit you can you with the correct equipment.

If You Have Your Own Equipment

If you’re bringing your own equipment, arrive 30 minutes prior to your lesson time. You can go directly to your designated-on-hill meeting area.

I Need to Rent Equipment
Arrive at least 1-hour prior (1.5 hours during holiday times) to your lesson time.

Bring your completed rental waiver. You will need to indicate your weight, height and shoe size. There are sizing charts located in the hallway before you enter the rental shop. Our team requires this information, so they can fit you can fit you with the appropriate equipment.
  • Enter the Frank King Day Lodge and go directly to the Rental Shop
  • Show your program confirmation email to the WinSport Rental Shop staff and receive your equipment (boots, helmet, snowboard or skis and poles).
  • After getting geared up, go outside to your lesson meeting spot where you’ll meet your instructor and receive your lift ticket.

  • Please Note:
    • If you have registered for a multi-day program you must collect your rental equipment each day by showing your lift ticket to the Rental shop staff.
    • Non WinSport Season Passholders: Your instructor will provide you with a lift ticket for all the days of your program, please don’t lose it! You must have your lift ticket every day of your program.

WinSport Season Passholders: You do not require a lift ticket but must be have your season pass with you every day of your program.

Located on the 2nd floor you will find a wide section of food and beverages in the food court. You can also stop by for a little quiet time or après ski in the Eighty-Eight Lounge. Checkout the daily specials.

Are both located on the main floor. Come on in and grab a quick gourmet coffee and pick up a few items

3-hour Hill ticket for $15.99

While your children are in lessons purchase a discounted hill ticket and spend some time on snow yourself! Stop by the Guest Services Desk in the Frank King Day Lodge to ask about this deal, exclusive to parents with children in 5 week lessons.

Garden Café

The Garden Café is located on the main floor of the Markin McPhail Centre. You will find a variety of beverages along with fresh or pre-made meal options and snacks

Performance Training Centre (PTC)

Located on the main floor at the Markin MacPhail Centre, beside the Garden Café. Purchase a five-visit punch card for $50+GST and get a workout in while your child hits the slopes. Visit the PTC Guest Services desk for more details and to start your workout.
