Youth Mountain Bike Programs

Our spring and mountain bike programs are designed to get your child back outside and on the trails! These multi-week programs will strengthen your rider's overall skills, endurance and knowledge. At WinSport we've got a campus that offers a diversity of terrain that allows riders to experience it all. Register your child into one of four levels and get them ready to hit the trails with you. Please note: If your child has any biking experience, even if it is not mountain biking specific, they may be a level 2 or 3. Please read out level descriptions and prerequisites carefully before registering.

Level 1 - Ages 6-11

This program is for bikers with no experience! Let us teach your child the first steps of riding a bike. They will learn through a fun introduction to all aspects of cycling. They will practice in a progressive learners area as they explore and learn with a friendly group of like-minded kids.

Key Goals

  • General introduction to biking
  • Learn correct body position and braking technique to improve control while riding

Level 2 - Ages 6-11

Your rider has completed level 1, is able to perform controlled stops using hand brakes and is ready to learn to bike on uneven terrain. Level 2 is for kids who can ride on pavement, are ready to bike on uneven terrain such as grass and dirt and learn how to correctly change gears. Kids will be introduced to all aspects of mountain biking.

Key Goals

  • Begin learning to ride on grass and dirt
  • Understand how to change gears
  • Introduction to cross-country, enduro and downhill mountain biking
  • Manage speed appropriately
Prerequisites Successful completion of Level 1 and / or is capable of the following:
  • Comfortable riding on pavement and roads
  • Able to ride straight down a gentle hill while controlling speed with hand brakes

Level 3 - Ages 6-11

Your rider has completed level 2, is comfortable riding on gentle off-road conditions, can handle small obstacles such as rocks and roots and can fully control their speed. Level 3 will continue to develop mountain bike skills and take on new challenges on green terrain.

Key Goals

  • Continue developing skills in green and blue terrain.
  • Comfortable climbing green terrain.
  • Comfortable descending green and blue terrain.
Prerequisites

Successful completion of Level 2 and / or is capable of the following:

  • Comfortable riding in gentle, off-road conditions
  • Able to handle small obstacles such as rocks, roots and bridges
  • Able to fully control speed

Level 4 - Ages 6-11

Your rider has completed Level 3, is comfortable riding on challenging off-road terrain at higher speeds, can fully control their speed, is ready to develop a more aggressive riding technique and take on blue terrain. In level 4 we will introduce skill-based maneuvers such as front/rear wheel lifts, bunny hops, drops and jumps. Your child should be able to be comfortable riding WinSport trails such as: Green Tea, Strawberry Shortcake, Tender Vittles.

  • Develop riding technique
  • Develop skill-based maneuvers including front/rear wheel lifts, bunny hops, drops and jumps
  • Continue developing skills in all areas of mountain biking
Prerequisites

Successful completion of Level 3 and / or is capable of the following:

  • Confident riding on challenging off-road terrain at higher speeds
  • Able to remain in full control of speed

All Mountain MTB Program

The snow has melted and the trails are calling! Get your rippers back on the trails early to start the season off right. The All Mountain program continues to develop fundamental skills to take kids' riding to the next level. This includes braking, gearing, and body positioning skills. Riders are exposed to all aspects of mountain biking, including cross country and downhill.  Let’s build confidence and resilience early for a truly epic season of riding!

Level 4 - Ages 6-9 & 10-14

This is our entry level All Mountain group suitable to riders who have completed level 3 in camps or programs who are looking for longer riding sessions and bigger loops. This program continues to develop skills on all terrain including single-track cross-country trails and our downhill chair accessible trails. All Mountain Level 4 teaches fundamental skills to set kids up to pursue the discipline of their choice in the future.

  • Develop skill-based maneuvers such as wheel lifts, drop and jumps
  • Expose kids to all disciplines of mountain biking to strengthen and develop fundamental skills

Level 5 - Ages 6-9 & 10-14

All Mountain Level 5 is for kids who are looking to advance their skills on steeper and more technical trails. Participants take on more challenging terrain, including root-covered trails , and are exposed to features that require drops and jumps.

  • Develop skill-based maneuvers such as wheel lifts, drop and jumps
  • Expose kids to all disciplines of mountain biking to strengthen and develop fundamental skills

Prerequisites

  • Completion of All Mountain Level 4 or Level 4 (camp lesson) OR confident on all types of single-track terrain and able to climb and descend on blue level trails
  • Comfortably rides trails such as: Fired Up, Dragon Slayer, Tender Vittles
  • Comfortably rides a 8-10 km loop in one of the following areas: Eastlands, West Bragg Creek, Canmore Nordic Centre
  • Remain in full control of speed and direction on moderately steep and technical single-track trails

All Mountain Level 6 is for kids looking to test their skills and push the limits. Participants prepare to tackle steeper, more technical terrain in all disciplines. They will continue to develop as a well-rounded cross country and downhill rider and have the skills required to take on the next step.

  • Expose kids to all disciplines of mountain biking to strengthen and develop fundamental skills

  • Comfortably rides trails such as: Fired Up, Dragon Slayer, Tender Vittles, Safari Planet, BBQ Jello
  • Comfortably rides 10 km loop in one of the following areas: Eastlands, West Bragg Creek, Canmore Nordic Centre
  • Remain in full control of speed and direction on moderately steep and technical single-track trails

Lets PEDAL! Our All Mountain Enduro Program focuses on introducing and developing athletes in the discipline of Enduro. This fast-paced, high fitness discipline is the fastest growing area in mountain biking today, so get ready to go fast and push yourself to the limit.

Prerequisites
  • Physically fit and well-rounded rider
  • Remain in full control of speed and direction on moderately steep and technical single-track trails
  • Comfortably rides 10 km loop in one of the following areas: West Bragg Creek, Canmore Nordic Centre
  • Experience with other areas, such as: Fernie - Aggravated Assault, Alternate Flight Pattern.
  • Moose Mountain - T-Dub, Race of Spaces. Canmore Nordic Centre - Black Coal Chutes.

MTB Freeride Program

Ages 7-9, 10-13 & 14-17

t’s all about the style and flow! Our freeride program begins to hone in on skills and develop freeride-specific riding utilizing the skills park and downhill trails. Rain or shine, your rider’s skills will get sleeker, faster and more gnarly. Let’s shred!

Prerequisites

  • Physically fit and well-rounded rider
  • Remain in full control of speed and direction on moderately steep and technical single-track trails
  • Experience with other areas, such as: Fernie - Aggravated Assault, Alternate Flight Pattern.
  • Moose Mountain - T-Dub, Race of Spaces. Canmore Nordic Centre - Black Coal Chutes.

Discover Downhill Mountain Biking

Beginner Downhill - Ages 13+

It's never too late to learn a new activity! This introductory downhill mountain bike lesson is designed for riders who are ready to tackle the chairlift. Our instructors will teach you the skills needed to explore the chair lift accessible trails with confidence. Riders must be comfortable on off-road single-track trails and be looking to develop their skills. This lesson focuses on refining the basic skills of off-road riding and applying them to downhill biking. This program includes lessons & rentals

MTB Freeride Skill Development

New season, new skills, and no excuses! Lets start the season off early to refine, relearn and develop new skills to set you up for an epic summer of shredding. You will tackle a variety of terrain to improve cornering, climbing, line choice, and improve onfidence. Set yourself up for the epic summer of riding yet!

Beginner - Ages 9-13, 14-17, 18+ & Women 18+

Get ready to ride! This clinic is for riders looking to introduce and develop new skills on the trails. Come gain mileage and confidence so you can set the pace!
